Managing software license compliance has been one of our most challenging tasks, our IT operations guys try as hard as they can but we know are are always behind in a number of areas:
- I can't say that we have full understanding of the licensing rules that apply to each and every piece of software we deploy/use .. this leaves up exposed

- We seem always surprised when our software vendors bring up the compliance topic, we get defensive and that tells the vendor that we have something to hide

How do you manage software license compliance in your organization? Who owns this responsibility? Do you do internal audits? How open are you with your vendors?

I am tired of not being able to be on top of this and hate the way it impacts our budgets in an unplanned fashion.

Why can't software companies set set up something of an indepedent body to manage audits and compliance? Or maybe if they had usergroups it would have been easier. I know some companies outsource this job to auditors .. one way or the other .. a 3rd party would always be easier to deal with than the company itself.

We asked our ket software vendors to give us some basic training of how to manage compliance, some have even given us software to report on no if users etc.

And we are doing well ever since, at least we know what is going on and can budget accordingly.

It is actually simple but we make it complex .. we get our people trained by our suppliers and run joint audits on regular basis (18 months).

If we are under licensed we budget and pay the following year. I really find it simple.
