One recent survey found that 67% of senior IT professionals are expected to be available during vacation, said TEKsystems, a staffing agency that conducted the research.

If we CIOs want to think that organizations cannot function without 24x7 IT then it is natural that IT as a function is running 7x24.

Now disasters tend to happen on weekends (my experience), security breaches, system downs, failed upgrades etc.. and also it is normal that such things are escalated to the CIO or his management team.

So it is by definition that we cannot have a real weekend, notr every weekend anyway!

Yes this is becoming a night mare, the number of things that have to operate 7 x 24 are massive, we have changed our employment contract for IT people to cater for longer hours, shifts, weekend and on call time.

But I see that my people are tired.

No not a chance, although we seem to have made great progress in reducing unplanned downtime. But still it may not be down time it maybe project issues or urgent management requirements.
