The Sun will set under Oracle, the two companies work on very different things. Don't be fooled by the new Sun announcements of new processors and servers.
It is sad but most likely true.

In Oracle world this year, Sun featured heavily and was it was clear that Oracle jas solid plans to invest in the technology .. I think Sun is very safe under Oracle.

On the other hand I can't say that all the sun people I spoke to are delighted .. some don't enjoy the new reporting structure, others don't enjoy way Oracle operates .. or miss the freedom they had in the past.

All in all I give Oracle the thumbs up, that must have been a very difficult merger to integrate given that Oracle had very little to do with hardware in the past.

I don't think that killing the name Sun and replacing it with "Oracle Hardware" is a particularly smart idea .. otherwise I think from a customer perspective the acquisition seems to be reassuring in terms of Sun's future and technical leadership.

Hi, here is an article from cio.com that looks at Sun a year on after the acquisition. In general the author thinks Oracle has done a reasonably good job in terms of modernizing Sun's products but has taken a PR beating because of its handling of some open source issues.

I quote "But a review of Oracle's moves during the past year reveals advances for former Sun product lines, soothing the concerns of IT pros who had committed to Sun's technology"

I just do not like uncertainty but one can't ignore SUN when you are buying big servers, so I continue to consider them but hope that Oracle drives the business to growth and stability so we can continue to buy SUN without worry.
